Kevin Mills specializes in the areas of the law of higher education, commercial law, business litigation, employment law, and products liability. Since joining the firm in 1993, Mr. Mills has represented universities, large corporations, small companies and individuals covering a wide variety of legal issues. In the field of higher education he has provided general organizational counseling and litigated on behalf of Golden Gate University and Dominican University of California. He advises college administration on staff, faculty and student claims, as well as student disciplinary matters. He has served as primary counsel in the negotiation of significant technology licensing agreements, and other vendor relationships. He has also successfully represented both universities in trusts and estate litigation for the recovery of institutional gifts diverted through undue influence and elder abuse. He has aided corporate clients in negotiation of simple contracts and complex commercial agreements. Recently he served as co-lead trial counsel in a four-month jury trial in San Luis Obispo premised on fraud, warranty and strict products liability, obtaining a complete defense verdict for his client. He then successfully defended the judgment on appeal. He works closely with employers in employment-related disputes in the areas of wrongful termination, racial and gender bias, sexual harassment, wage and hour disputes, ADA counseling and litigation involving misappropriation of trade secrets. While often these cases may be resolved through negotiation alone, Mr. Mills' employment practice also includes litigation before state and federal courts and in arbitration and mediation proceedings. Mr. Mills is head of the firm's Art Law group, assisting galleries, artists and designers in business planning and transactions, as well as dispute resolution. He serves as panel counsel to California Lawyers for the Arts. Prior to coming to the firm in 1993, Mr. Mills was an attorney with Cooley Godward in San Francisco, where his practice included securities and consumer fraud issues, real estate and employment law. Mr. Mills received his law degree from University of Michigan Law School in 1990, and Bachelor of Arts degree in English and American Literature with high honors from University of California, San Diego in 1986. He is a member of the State Bar of California, the San Francisco Bar Association, the National Association of College and University Attorneys. He is a licensed private pilot and scuba diver, and his other, more practical interests include woodworking, gardening and choral singing.
